During Bjerknes’ pioneer-ing studies, the causes of a turnabout from a warm phase to a cold phase (La Niña) was not known (Philander 1990). After Bjerknes published his hypothesis, ENSO was not intensively studied until the 1980s. The intense warm epi- Consequently, the Walker circulation is associated with a positive feedback, called the Bjerknes feedback (Fig. 5.3), in which the easterly surface wind stress enhances the zonal SST gradient which in turns amplifies the wind stress. Bjerknes’ positive feedback, the oscillatory nature of ENSO needs a negative feedback to turn the coupled ocean-atmosphere system from a warm (cold) phase to a cold (warm) phase.
